
Dr Haian Dukhan is a political scientist specialising in Syria, Iraq and the wider Middle East. His research focuses on tribal politics, identity, conflict, sectarianism, political authority and relations between states and local communities.
He is a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Teesside University and a Fellow at the Centre for Syrian Studies at the University of St Andrews.
He holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of St Andrews, an MA in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia and a BA in English Literature from Al-Ba’th University in Syria.

Born and educated in Syria before continuing his academic career in the United Kingdom, Haian combines regional knowledge with extensive research experience. He also contributes policy analysis and expert commentary on Syria and the wider region.
